Choosing a Dance Studio for your Child

Starting at a new dance studio can be a nerveracking process and it can be hard to know whether one studio is a better fit for you and your child, over another studio. There are so many different options out there nowadays and they are all offering somewhat similar classes and styles. So how do you know which one would be perfect for your family and which ones may not be ideal for what you are looking for?

Let me first just start by saying, that our studio is not right for every child. Yes, you heard that correctly – we want every child who comes through our doors, to truly resonate with what we are about and our values. Just like in life, those values and our way of doing things, is not for everyone and that is totally okay! In fact we would encourage another studio who does offer what you are after, because we know that it may be better for you and your family.

There are a few keys things you may want to think about when considering what studio would be a perfect match for what you are after.

  1. Ask yourself – what is the one thing I really want my child to achieve in dance classes? This is a great question to ask that will really determine your level of expectation from a dance studio. If you are wanting them to become a professional dancer and have as many performance opportunities as possible, then you may be looking for more of a competitive studio that specialises in that aspect of performance. If you are looking for them to build social skills and confidence, then you may need to consider a studio that takes more of a family and nuturing approach. Both are completely fine, but it will help you determine what studio is best when you have a clear outline of your goals.
  2. What language are they communicating in their marketing? When searching for a new dance studio, it is important to do your research. Jump onto their website, go onto their social media pages and ask friends that may already have kids enrolled at the studio. From their website and social media channels, you should be able to get an idea of the culture of the studio, their values and philsophy and also their level of professionalism and organisation. See which ones resonate more or less with you, and which ones you get a really positive vibe from. This will allow you to connect with the right studio(s) and make an informed decision.
  3. Get in touch with the studio – One of the best ways to determine whether a studio is the right fit for you, is to reach out to them. Most studio owners should be more than happy to answer your questions and offer positive customer service to you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions so you know exactly what the studio is about, their fees and any other things that you should know about before signing up. Many studios will offer a free trial, so this can be a great way to get a feel for the studio and see whether it works for you and your schedule.
  4. Once you’ve had a trial, ask your child how they found the class – although one studio may work better for you and your schedule, it is also important to consider your child’s needs and whether they enjoyed the class. Observe their actions and discuss with them what they liked about the class. Remember, sometimes it can take some kids longer to warm up to the class, so if you liked the culture of the studio but wasn’t sure it was the right class or you have further questions, be sure to reach out to the studio, as they are sure to have experienced these things before and can help guide you in the right direction.
  5. Choose a studio that offers what you are after – one studio may be perfect for one child, but not for another and that is completely okay! It really depends on each individual child and what you are wanting them to achieve. Each dance school will offer a slightly different experience and ultimately it has to be one that you feel completely comfortable in and resonate with, entirely.

Whatever you choose, we know your child will have the most fabulous time, experiencing the joy that dance brings. We wish you the best in your search and of course invite you to reach out if you would like some more information about our studio and the classes we offer.
