Benefits of dance in reducing stress

It can sometimes be hard to know how many activities are too many, when it comes to your child studying at school. You or they, may be worried that by doing after school activities they won’t get all their work done or will end up feeling more stressed as a result. Physical activity such as dance can provide so many amazing benefits though, that can actually help alleviate stress during stressful periods at school. Let me tell you how…

  1. Physical activity releases the feel good hormones – endorphins: It has been known for years that physical activity is so good for your brain and overall well being as it releases the hormone that makes you feel good and increase your mood. This can lead to you feeling more focused, motivated and able to concentrate on the task at hand.
  2. It helps keep you mentally fit: particularly through HSC years, it can be tempting to put all your energy into study which as a result can lead to burnout. Not only this if we are exerting all of our energy just with study, school and home life then we can very quickly start to feel the effects of fatigue and exhaustion, which is counterproductive as we then start to lose motivation. Physical activity as mentioned above, keeps your mood levels up and will help take your mind off study which means that when you do focus on study, you are more likely to be productive.
  3. It allows you to be social: I know I am guilty of burrowing myself into my desk during the HSC and focusing very heavily on study. However by coming to dance class each week, I was able to release any stress that was building up and recoup both mentally and physically. It gave me an opportunity to talk about things other than school and give my brain time to recharge.

Whatever stage of school your dancer is at, it is important that they do try their best and devote time to improving and gaining new skills academically. However it is just as equally important to ensure they are still getting their physical activity in and having an activity that alleviates stress.
